Owens Corning Basement Systems

I haven't been posting much because we have been in the process of doing some home renovations and they seem to be sucking up all of my creative juices. Prior to this, I thought only my kids were capable of doing that. Anyway, it doesn't take much to stress me out so it's no surprise I have been in a constant state of feeling like I'm listening to nails on a chalkboard.

One of our projects is to waterproof and finish our completely, Godforsaken basement so our twin sons can have a playroom (aka place they can go to stay the heck away from me). Somehow, we had heard amazing things about the Owens Corning basement system. Apparently, it is a sound-proof, water-resistant, ever-lasting, indestructible, self-healing, modular way of finishing a basement. I couldn't help but be intrigued, but was warned in advance it was pricey. My husband and I made an appointment for an estimate and were told to allow 2 hours of our day since it is a long process. I was apprehensive because it would be cutting into my nap-time but figured it would be worth it just to see this "self-healing", miracle system.

Before the salesman arrived, Mike and I placed bets on how much it would cost. Thinking we only had a small, 350 square foot basement, I guessed around $10,000. My husband estimated a little more. The guy arrived and showed us all the aspects of the magic basement system. Before he went downstairs to measure everything and give us a price he asked if we had any questions. I answered that all my questions would be answered once he gave us the cost. Mind you, we all ready had an estimate of $5200 to drywall and finish the area. After plugging in all the numbers into his computer, we were wowed by a whopping price of $33,000 to do the job. Immediately wondering what he had been smoking and whether he realized he didn't have to actually dig us a basement, I kindly told him we wasted his time. We had no intention of paying $88 per square foot to make a playroom for our kids. He warned us against dry-walling because the possible mold could cause severe breathing problems for us and our kids. After responding that we were paying a hefty sum to waterproof the area and that my kids already cause me plenty of breathing problems, I promptly threw him out of my home.

Mike and I spent the rest of the evening laughing and calling our astonished friends with the news. My main regret was having wasted my precious nap-time with all of this. After all it is vital to my self-healing process.
